Stevia and Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0

Posted by GetYour90.com

Youngevity attempts to use safe and healthy ingredients when sweetening their products.  Rather than using sugar or unhealthy artificial sweeteners, you will find Stevia or Xylitol as the sugar replacement.   If you have read my blog posts before you know one particular product I enjoy and highly recommend for vitamins and minerals is Beyond Tangy Tangerine 2.0.   BTT is one product that contains Stevia rather than sugar.

What is Stevia?

The following information about Stevia comes from the website: http://globalsteviainstitute.com/consumers/stevia-story/what-is-stevia/
Stevia is a naturally sourced, zero-calorie sweetener that has been used as a natural sugar substitute and flavoring ingredient for hundreds of years. Stevia is a natural origin plant extract from the leaves of the stevia plant.
The stevia plant was first scientifically recorded in 1899 as Eupatorium rebaudianum by Moises Santiago de Bertoni, in Paraguay. In 1905, it was later defined as Stevia Rebaudiana, a member of the sunflower (Asteraceae) family and related to the Chrysanthemum.

Is Stevia Safe and Healthy?

The sweet tasting components of stevia are called steviol glycosides, which are naturally present in the stevia leaf.   Purified stevia leaf extracts can contain one steviol glycoside or several different glycosides, which can be up to 400 times sweeter than sugar.
Stevia has also been well studied and approved for the whole family, including pregnant women and those with diabetes.
High purity stevia leaf extracts are used as plant-based, zero-calorie sweetening ingredients around the world. These extracts, chemically known as steviol glycosides, have been rigorously tested in over 200 peer-reviewed published research studies and deemed safe for human consumption
Regulatory agencies around the world have also concluded that high purity stevia leaf extract is safe for use as a sweetener for the general population. In 2008 and 2009 respectively, the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization’s Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA), a global panel of food ingredient safety experts, approved high purity steviol glycosides for human consumption as a non-medical ingredient, and developed an Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI).
